Beaubien Engineering, LLC, was formed in 2012 to provide engineering services to public and private clients across Troy, MI, and the nation. We recognized the importance of roadway operation and traffic pattern efficiency and wanted to develop better solutions.

Meet Richard Beaubien

Extensive Experience
Richard served as Transportation Director for Hubbell, Roth & Clark, Inc. for over 20 years. He also worked for 14 years as the Transportation Director for the City of Troy, Michigan; two years as Chief Engineer for Reid, Cool & Michalski Traffic and Transportation Engineers; and five years as a Highway Engineer for the Federal Highway Administration.
He chairs the Metro Detroit Traffic Incident Management Coordinating Committee and is a former president of the Intelligent Transportation Society of Michigan. In addition to his extensive project work, he has court testimony experience. As a frequent public speaker on traffic safety and intelligent transportation topics, Mr. Beaubien takes high-level traffic engineering concepts and communicates those in layman’s terms.
Education & Achievements
He has been certified as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer by the Transportation Professional Certification Board, Washington, D.C. He is also a recipient of the Institute’s Marsh Award.

Richard Fromm Beaubien, P.E.
Richard Fromm Beaubien, P.E., is the Managing Director of Beaubien Engineering, LLC, based in Troy, Michigan. With more than four decades of experience in municipal traffic engineering and transportation systems, Mr. Beaubien is a recognized expert in transportation planning, highway design, traffic operations, right-of-way acquisition, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Mr. Beaubien began his career in 1968 as a highway engineer with the Federal Highway Administration. In 1975, he became the Transportation Engineer for the City of Troy, Michigan, a position he held until 1989. He then led the Transportation Department at Hubbell, Roth & Clark until 2011, and in 2012, founded Beaubien Engineering, LLC to provide specialized engineering consulting services.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science in Transportation and Traffic Engineering from the University of Michigan. As a student, he was actively involved with Triangle Fraternity, where he later served as Chairman of both the Building Loan Fund and the Triangle Building and Housing Corporation beginning in 1980. Mr. Beaubien is a licensed Professional Engineer in multiple states, including Michigan, Florida, Illinois, and Missouri. He is also a Registered Traffic Engineer in California and holds certifications as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer and Road Safety Professional from the Transportation Professional Certification Board.
Throughout his career, Mr. Beaubien has pioneered significant advancements in traffic control systems. He is particularly proud of introducing the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) to the Detroit metro area and directing the development of intelligent transportation systems for Detroit’s freeways. His innovative work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Marsh Award from the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the Engineer of the Year Award (1987). Most recently, he received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award for his lifelong contributions to the field. He is also the recipient of the Distinguished Member Award from the Institute of Transportation Engineers Great Lakes District (2023) and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Intelligent Transportation Society of Michigan (2024). He maintains active memberships in professional organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers, and the Transportation Research Board. In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Beaubien is an avid sailor and a member of the Pontiac Yacht Club.
